This is the Cemetery of Salamansa, São Vicente Island, Cape Verde. The main cemetery of São Vicente Island was built in 1888 and is located in Chã de Cemitério, near Mindelo city. This smaller one, near Salamansa, was built some 100 years later in a barren land, by the road between Salamansa proper and Praia do Norte (Norte Baía). Most of religious people in Cape Verde are Roman Catholics. It took a long time from the completion of the construction to the day the first body was buried there because people just preferred to be buried at Mindelo cemetery.
